This position is in support of a presolicitation and is contingent upon final contract award
The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) provides highly specialized health physics, regulatory compliance, and operational radiation safety support to the Orlando VA Healthcare System. The RSO acts as the primary authority on site for the safe use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices (e.g., Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT, diagnostic radiology). The successful candidate will ensure the facility maintains strict compliance with the VA National Health Physics Program (NHPP), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), OSHA, and local safety standards.
Core ResponsibilitiesProgram Leadership & NRC Compliance: Direct the facility's Radiation Safety Program, ensuring full compliance with the VA's NRC Master Materials License (MML) and VHA Directives (e.g., VHA Directive 1105).
Clinical Safety Surveillance: Conduct continuous audits, leak tests, and inspections of clinical areas utilizing isotopes and radiation-producing equipment; calibrate survey instruments and document findings.
Dosimetry & Exposure Management: Administer the personnel monitoring program (dosimetry badges), analyze occupational exposure reports, investigate any ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) exceedances, and enforce corrective actions.
Radiation Safety Committee (RSC): Serve as a vital member (and often coordinator) of the RSC, briefing hospital leadership, principal investigators, and medical staff on compliance metrics, incidents, and protocol updates.
Emergency Response & Decontamination: Maintain and execute radiological emergency response plans, providing immediate on-site mitigation and reporting for radiological spills or uncontrolled exposures.
Training & Credentialing: Develop and deliver mandatory radiation safety training for clinical staff, researchers, and ancillary personnel.
Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of applied Health Physics or Radiation Safety Officer experience within a complex hospital, clinical, or federal healthcare system.
Regulatory Expertise: Deep working knowledge of NRC regulations (10 CFR Parts 20 and 35), ALARA principles, and federal hospital compliance standards. Prior experience in a VA or DoD medical treatment facility is highly preferred.
Certifications: Must meet the NRC training and experience requirements to be formally named as an RSO on a radioactive materials license. Board Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) as a Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or by the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) / American Board of Radiology (ABR) is strongly preferred. National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) is also highly valued.
Education: Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Health Physics, Medical Physics, Radiological Science, or a closely related physical science.
Clearance: Must be capable of passing a federal background investigation to obtain a VA Public Trust (PIV) credential.
